We're a handy bunch of people. We're skilled craftsmen, designers and engineers and we know our way around a wedge of wood. In addition, we welcome any opportunity, to prove ourselves to you.
Mel Archer, president and manager of Pacific Design was born with a gift of artistic ability. With his keen interest in arts and design, Mel sought a way to blend his artistic talent with a profession that actually generated income. Thirty-four years ago, he began designing and building custom furniture and selling it from his garage. He soon transitioned from furniture into custom cabinetry, following the logic that every home needs cabinets. These logical business decisions have served Mel well. After 10 years of solo operations, Pacific Design was born.
Now occupying over 22,000 square feet of elephantine space in Hillsboro, Oregon , Pacific Design upholds a reputation as one of the finest custom cabinet makers in the Northwest. The company now has 22 employees with responsibilities ranging from Sander to Finisher to Expert Craftsman to Kitchen Designer. In spite of this awesome growth, Pacific Design has managed to maintain its family-owned business sense.
Colleen Archer works with Mel, her husband, as the Office Manager of the company. She's the one you'll talk to about pretty much everything from job estimates to door styles to appointment times. Chris Archer, Mel and Colleen's son, remains one of the most senior employees having begun his work in the shop at the age of 13. He's moved up the ladder since then, as we'd hope, and is now in charge of Engineering. This is the man who translates fabulous designs into the cut list orders that the rest of the shop needs in order to begin construction on a project. At one time or another, Jeremy and Joy, also children of Mel and Colleen have been employed with Pacific Design in one capacity or another.
Through the years Pacific Design has won awards for custom cabinet design. Magazines have featured the stunning kitchens built by the skilled craftsmen. Even celebrities have sought out the beautifully crafted cabinetry. Is it because the cabinet door opens smoothly? Maybe. Is it because the finished product actually resembles fine furniture? Possibly. Could it be that every element of a Pacific Design Kitchen, Bath, Library, Family Room is created, designed and executed with artistic integrity? Come see us and you'll find out.

What we do
We've found that honesty is a favorable trait in a company's character. So we'll just tell you straight up what we do: We craft dreams. There's nothing hocus-pocus about it - in fact, you'll have more hand in the dream-building than we will.
It's like this: Clients come to us in varying dream-like states. Sometimes the entire kitchen has been planned down to the last handle. Other times, our simple questions are met with blank looks and averted eyes. We like that; it means we get to work with you more closely, building a relationship that, in the end, serves us all very well. Whatever your dream-like state, we plan to give you every tool you need in order to get that envious grin from your best friend.
To get you started, we connect you with one of our 4 Designers. These are professionals trained in cabinet layout and room design, two of them are Certified Kitchen Designers. You won't see that arm-wave-and-point design method here. From there you work closely with the Designer, who is experienced and knowledgeable about both the necessities of kitchen design and the outstanding capabilities of the shop craftsmen. This phase includes selecting wood type, door style, handles and knobs, range hoods, refrigerator and other appliance accommodations (have you seen the new microwave oven drawers?) and every other aspect that matters. You'll arrive at a final design that pleases you more than punch.
Our lead time varies from eight weeks to twelve weeks. While your dream is being concocted of all things extraordinary, we encourage you to spend long lazy days in repose, considering all the possibilities your new cabinetry will afford you. Because once it's there, in your home, you're certain to be otherwise occupied with this new, efficient work space. Gourmet dinner anyone?
At the point that your new custom cabinetry is installed, you're bound to wonder about maintaining the relationship with your helpful Pacific Design staff. No matter. You can always give us a call about that door that sticks (it's probably just peanut butter) or that tiny allowance between the fridge and the cabinet (it'll settle within a few weeks). We'll talk you through the crisis or even come over for a visit to check things out. Offer us pie and coffee and we might even spend some time discussing the finer points of using your new storage space efficiently. That's the kind of service we're all about.
Pacific Design cabinetry is a wholly unique product, hand-crafted and made exactly to your order specifications. Lead times vary according to our in-process order file but you can count on a minimum of 8 weeks, and up to 14 weeks, after your order is finalized. Cabinetry by Pacific Design is of premium quality, sure to surpass your expectations.
Pricing is done by quoting on plans the client provides. In the event that there are no plans to quote from, a design retainer is required to start the project. Costs of cabinetry is based upon door style, wood, finish, accessories and miscellaneous items, with the cabinetry measured by the lineal foot.
While Pacific Design has successfully completed projects in several areas of the country, the out of region inquirer may not be cognizant of the commitment he needs to make in order for us to provide him with a fully realized custom cabinet project. In such cases, we ask the potential client to consult with us specifically regarding geographical and other considerations. In order to supply a responsible quotation, we ask that the client submit plans and specifications describing the scope and nature of the project.
In addition, the out of region client must:
- Be willing to be involved in the process
- Provide detailed and very accurate field measurements (a CAD drawing will be returned for confirmation)
- Understand the shipping process and arrange for shipping.
- Be able to locate expert cabinet installers from the local area (technical assistance will be provided to out-of-region installers)
- Be willing to complete financial arrangements prior to shipping (our banking reference is available)
In general the out of region project requires close attention to all details and when this is done properly a successful job is surely the result.
